What is URL Rewriting ? :

Every page on the web has a unique URL. The URL of a dynamic page is like this: www.example.com/index.php?id=3&pid=3933. A big disadvantage of this URL is that it conveys no useful information to the search engine and user. Moreover such URL structures just cannot be memorized. Such pages need to be converted into static pages, the URL of which is search engine friendly and easily memorable. URL rewriting is a technique used to ‘translate’ a URL into something which can be easily interpreted by the user and server.

For detailed information, you may visit http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/misc/rewriteguide.htm.
Nowadays Web hosting providers offer rewriting modules. Even open sources like CMS (joomla, mambo, wordpress etc) provide an option for rewriting URLs. And to achieve this, you need not have a background of programming.

Joomla users can enable url rewriting with a very easy step. Just go to Global Configuration, at the right side you would see a Heading " SEO SETTING" with three options. Just Enable all the options and save the setting. Now, go to Root directory of your FTP and rename your httaccess.txt file to .httaccess. Your rewriting url option is set on auto and whenever you make a page, its url will be a static page!
